SOL Cut Scores Update

Virginia is updating the Standards of Learning (SOL) performance levels and passing scores over the next several school years. Beginning in the 2026–2027 school year, the passing scores for many Reading and Math SOL assessments in grades 3–8 will begin to increase. To make this transition gradual, Virginia has added a temporary performance level called “Pass/Approaching.”
During the transition years, students who score at the Pass/Approaching, Pass/Proficient, or Pass/Advanced levels will be considered to have passed the SOL for school accountability and graduation requirements. However, students scoring at the Proficient or Advanced levels have demonstrated grade-level mastery of Virginia’s more rigorous academic standards.
These changes are being phased in over four years rather than happening all at once. The updated cut scores will be fully implemented in the 2029–2030 school year, with the End-of-Course Reading assessment following a longer timeline.
